A Boxing historian and author, Mr. Romano has followed and studied the Sport of Boxing for over 40 years. Several years ago, he served as a research consultant for the HBO Boxing series RingLife where he interfaced with prominent promoters, fighters and trainers. At that time he also produced and hosted a cable television show Boxing with Fred Romano which aired monthly in New York City.
In 2004, his first book was released, The Boxing Filmography, American Features, 1920-2003, through McFarland Publishers, Inc., to critical acclaim. Critics have described the book as “well-written and researched,….eminently readable,….illuminating,….absorbing,….informative and entertaining.” In conjunction with the book, he has appeared on several radio programs including WFAN’s The Tony Paige Show in New York, WOR’s The Joey Reynolds Show, a nationally syndicated program, and The Wiseguy Show, hosted by Vinny “Big Pussy” Pastore.
In 2017, his second book was published by Skyhorse Publishers, Inc., The Golden Age of Boxing on Radio and Television, A Blow-By-Blow Description: 1921-1964. Critics have lauded the book as “riveting…arresting, and “absorbing,” and have strongly recommended it as “a valuable resource,” and “a valuable addition to any boxing library.” The book earned a 2018 nomination for a Theater Library Association award for interpretive use of research and archival materials and is regularly featured on author panels, lectures and radio programs.
Romano is also the creator and writer of several boxing premises and treatments including historical boxing documentary film, Ethnic Warriors: The Fight to Become American (Pre-Production). Attached to the film project is narrator Danny Aiello (Academy Award Nominee, Best Supporting Actor, “Do the Right Thing”) and interviewee Budd Schulberg (Academy Award Winner, Best Screenplay, “On the Waterfront”).
A member of the American Association for the Improvement of Boxing (AAIB) for twenty years, he has also served that organization as a member of the board of directors and as a member of the journal committee. From 1991 through 1995, Mr. Romano acted as a certified amateur judge, judging boxing matches throughout the New York area, including the prestigious New York Golden Gloves finals held annually in Madison Square Garden in New York City. Other boxing related experience includes his involvement with the Westchester Amateur Boxing Association, as recording secretary.
Most recently, Mr. Romano served as a Media consultant and writer for Star Boxing, Inc. where he wrote press releases, handled public relations, and coordinated live events for the international boxing promotional company. (2018-2019). He is presently a member of Ring 10 in New York, and a member of International Boxing Research Organization (IBRO). A retired attorney and business manager, he resides in White Plains, New York.
